Packing for camp without the stress

The parent's no-panic guide to everything your camper needs

Campers exploring the rocks and forest of the Blue Mountains
Campers exploring the rocks and forest of Kimbercote, WILDE Adventure Summer Camp — Blue Mountains, Ontario.

The night before your child's first day at WILDE Adventure Summer Camp, the last thing you want is a frantic morning scramble. Good news: the list is shorter than you think, and once you've packed it once, it takes five minutes. Here's everything you need — what goes in the bag, what stays home, and how to make the whole ritual fun.

The big nine — never leave home without them

These nine items cover a WILDE day in any weather. Label everything with your camper's name — gear with a name on it always finds its way home.

1. A trusty backpack to carry it all 2. A hearty packed lunch + snacks (peanut-free, please) 3. A full, refillable water bottle 4. Closed-toe shoes that can get muddy 5. Layers + rain gear: jacket, pants, boots 6. Sun kit: hat, sunscreen and sunglasses 7. Water shoes for creek and river days 8. A Transport-Canada-approved PFD (life jacket) from home 9. Bathing suit and a full change of clothes

Match the day: sun, rain or river

The weekly itinerary lands the Friday before each camp week — a 30-second look tells you exactly what kind of days are coming. Here's how to gear up for each one.

Water days

PFD on, water shoes packed, bathing suit and a dry change of clothes in the bag. Creek walks and river paddles at WILDE get gloriously wet — that's the point. Every camper who enters the water wears a Transport-Canada-approved life jacket; please send one from home.

Sunny days

Hat, sunscreen and sunglasses. There's not much shade out on the Beaver River, and a day in the Blue Mountains sun adds up fast. Apply sunscreen at home and pack the bottle for reapplication.

Rainy days

Camp runs rain or shine — always. A rain jacket, rain pants and rubber boots don't just keep your camper dry; they turn a wet day into the best kind of muddy adventure. Pack them every week, not just the weeks when rain is forecast.

Pack together — campers who load their own bag always know where the snacks are. Five minutes tonight means smooth trails tomorrow.

The do-not-pack list

Short list. Very important.

Screens and gadgets

Phones, tablets, handheld games — leave them home. The forest is the entertainment at WILDE, and devices are a distraction from the whole point of camp. Your camper won't miss them.

Peanut products

WILDE is a peanut-free camp. Please double-check every snack and lunch label before it goes in the bag. If you're unsure, leave it out — there's plenty of room for great peanut-free snacks.

Precious treasures

Anything that can't get muddy, wet or briefly misplaced is happier at home. That includes jewellery, expensive gear and any item your child would be heartbroken to lose.

The night-before ritual: five minutes tonight, smooth trails tomorrow

Pack together the evening before — campers who load their own bag always know where the snacks are, and it builds ownership of the adventure before it starts.

1. Check the plan — water day? Offsite trip? A 30-second look at the weekly itinerary sets up the whole bag. 2. Pack the bag together — backpack, check. Rain gear, check. PFD by the door for water days. 3. Lunch and water bottle — make it substantial, keep it peanut-free, and park it in the fridge until morning. Big days build big appetites. 4. Lay out the day's clothes — closed-toe shoes by the door, layers for the morning chill, sun hat on top. 5. Early to bed — tomorrow there's a forest to explore. Sleep is the secret packing item.
